One of my favorite places in Zhubei, not only because it's really high up, but also because you need a scooter to get there. It's a well kept secret.







Sometimes there is plenty of room, but the margin for error seems so small


I took this out my window today -- outside my dirty windows, because I am too much of a chicken to walk outside and clean them.






Architecture and Theatre in Zhubei Taiwan


New high-rise condo developments are shooting up all over Zhubei (also spelled Chubei and Jhubei) Taiwan. When I visited several years ago the amount of new buildings and one-upmanship was remarkable. It seemed unsustainable, and still seems so now, but the buildings are going up faster than ever -- each with a custom sales office, built to inspire.

They are constructed from luan (a cheap tropical hardwood) that holds up about long enough for the condos to sell. They are dramatic, and quite unusual given the mostly cookie-cutter appearance of the buildings they sell. Have a look...
